It was a Sunday afternoon during a holiday weekend when three teenagers in Pearl River, New York, set out in an SUV on a grocery run. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash that followed, but the two passengers are dead and the driver required hospitalization for serious injuries. The force of the collision with another vehicle sent the SUV off of an overpass and onto train tracks 50 feet below, where the vehicle caught fire.
The 15-year-old female passenger who died was a cousin of the 17-year-old driver. The other passenger was a 17-year-old male classmate of the female passenger. The driver survived because witnesses to the accident immediately sprung into action to pull her from the burning vehicle.
However, these “good samaritans” were unable to rescue the two passengers, later pronounced dead at the hospital, before the vehicle became engulfed in flames. Friends, family and members of the community said their final good-byes at the respective funerals held on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week.
Authorities have ruled out drugs or alcohol as factors in the crash. At this point, there are no charges, and the crash is still under investigation. No information is available regarding the driver of the second vehicle involved in the collision.
Understandably, loved ones express devastation at the sudden and tragic deaths of two young people. Schools in the community plan to have grief counselors available for students to talk to. It is not only those directly involved who suffer as a result of a motor vehicle accident. Victims and families may wish to consult with an attorney.
