Every New York season brings new hazards for drivers of any type of vehicle. If you are one who is concerned about keeping the road safe and avoiding an accident, serious injury or death, there are several hazards that are specific to summer that you should watch for.

The Travelers Companies Inc. lists summer construction as one huge cause of summer traffic. This increases the risks on the road with detours and traffic delays. Drivers are encouraged to adjust schedules or find an alternate route if there is construction in an area. Watch signs closely when driving through construction and merge early when lanes are ending to avoid driving right into a work zone.

Along with increased construction, summer is also the time for motorcyclists to be out on the road. As the number of motorcycles on the road increases, so does the likelihood of a serious accident. Drivers should be extra aware when driving close to a motorcycle, always look twice to make sure your vehicle is a safe distance and allow for greater distances between your vehicle and the motorcycle.

Bicycles are also more common on the road during summer. They are harder to see and vulnerable to crashes and injuries. Drivers can keep bicyclists safe by giving them space, learning the local laws about the rights of bicycle riders and watch closely for them when turning right or opening the car door.

During the summer, pedestrians are out on the road more often and can be difficult to see when it is dark. Always stop at crosswalks for pedestrians and watch for other cars stopped at a crosswalk even if you cannot see a pedestrian. Some are distracted while walking and it is important that the driver is aware of them.
