The weather may be turning for the worse here in New York, but that does not mean that thousands of pedestrians will not be out and about on New York streets accomplishing their daily business. However, less sunlight and potentially icy roads can make the daily walk much more dangerous than normal. According to AAA, one of the most important things pedestrians can do to ensure their safety is to remain highly visible

Remaining visible is of paramount importance for pedestrians in the winter. Did you know that according to the NHTSA, over 30% of pedestrian fatalities occur between 8 at night and 11:59 pm? Remember that there is less sunlight during the winter months so you will be less visible. A good idea to consider is picking a winter coat that is not black. Many pedestrians walk around cloaked entirely in black during the winter months, which is dangerous. If you must have a black or dark-colored winter coat, consider purchasing a reflective vest to wear on top of it. This is particularly important if you are walking after dark or in foggy conditions.

You may also want to consider walking without headphones in. While it is tempting to listen to your favorite music while walking to the subway, doing so will make you less aware of your surroundings. If you must listen to music at least occasionally, try to limit it to the times of day where there is plenty of sunlight and you are highly visible.

Additionally, do not jaywalk. This is important during any time of the year, but during the winter when the roads are icy and you are less visible it is even more important. Following the rules can help you stay alive.
